A Personal Message from Bradley W. Deacon: Breaking the Silence on PTSD As a former Federal Agent, Government Cybercrime Analyst/Investigator, and Lawyer, I've stood at the frontlines of digital justice. My career has been dedicated to protecting our community from the darkest corners of the internet, investigating crimes that most people couldn't imagine exist. Today, I'm sharing my story to prove that PTSD doesn't discriminate – it can affect anyone, even those trained to handle society's most challenging situations. The Reality Behind the Badge Despite my extensive training, legal expertise, and years of experience in federal law enforcement, I've learned that no amount of preparation can fully shield us from the psychological impact of repeatedly confronting human tragedy. In March 2024, I received a diagnosis that many in law enforcement fear but few discuss openly: severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This isn't just another war story. This is about acknowledging that strength sometimes means asking for help. I've taken the crucial step of seeking professional support, including specialized treatment at one of Australia's leading PTSD psychiatric facilities. My treating medical team, consisting of Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Doctors, and nurses, has been instrumental in guiding my recovery journey. Finding Light in the Darkness During my years of service, while confronting the darkest aspects of human nature daily, I discovered unexpected sources of solace. Writing stories and capturing moments through photography for my Instagram page became more than just hobbies – they evolved into crucial coping mechanisms. With my employer's full support and understanding that these creative pursuits posed no conflict of interest, I began crafting books and sharing images that helped me process and balance the weight of my daily work. These creative outlets became my sanctuary, a way to find beauty and meaning amid the challenges of law enforcement work. Finding Healing Through Words What began as a personal coping strategy has now been validated by my medical team as a vital therapeutic tool. My treating medical team has recognized and endorsed the powerful role that writing and creative expression play in my recovery journey. While previously I used writing as a way to process the darkness I encountered daily in my work, my focus now is different. Rather than promoting books or services, I'm using writing as a mindfulness strategy – a therapeutic tool for healing and processing, fully endorsed by my medical team who recognize its powerful role in recovery. Taking Action Effective immediately, I am stepping away from all professional services detailed on this website until at least 2026. This isn't an easy decision, but it's a necessary one. As someone who has spent their career upholding justice and protecting others, I'm now focusing on another crucial mission: recovery and advocacy. A Vision for Change This experience has ignited a new purpose. I'm committed to: Breaking down the stigma surrounding PTSD, particularly within law enforcement and legal communities Developing support systems for professionals exposed to high-impact content and traumatic situations Creating practical frameworks for organizations to better protect their employees' mental well-being Looking Forward When I return, it will be with renewed purpose and invaluable insights. Until then, I encourage anyone struggling – whether you're in law enforcement, legal practice, or any other field – to remember that seeking help is an act of courage, not weakness. The weight of trauma doesn't discriminate based on rank, education, or experience. If a former Federal Agent and Lawyer can openly acknowledge needing help, so can you. The Inspiration For The Project
In a world inundated by constant digital noise and a job that demanded staring into the darker corners of the internet, there was a yearning for something pure, something genuine. A respite, if you will. As a cybercrime analyst, the daily onslaught of witnessing the very worst of humanity can take its toll. The mental and emotional weight can be all-consuming. And in the quest to find a counterbalance, the allure of dawn — that transient time when the world is still, brimming with promise and potential — became a beacon.
The inspiration for the “Noir Mornings: 365 Days of Dawn” project was born out of this dichotomy. The stark contrast between the digital shadows of my day job and the raw, untouched beauty of dawn. Every morning, as the world slowly awakens, there exists a brief moment in time where everything is calm, pure, and untainted. This project became a personal commitment to seize that moment, to capture it in black and white, and to find solace in its simplicity.
